Hawaiian Ginger – One Dozen
Hawaiian ginger is another classic Hawaiianย flower. ย Tall with a remarkable red or pink display. ย The ‘flowers’ are actually bracts of bright red or soft pink. ย Over time tiny white flowers will emerge from the bracts. Surprisingly, red ginger is not native to Hawaii. It was introduced in the 1920’s as a plant for local gardens. Now it can be found throughout the islands. Even in Waikiki where hotels plant it to beautify their properties. It grows best in full sun but does OK with a little shade. The stalks are cut at the very bottom to allow the plant to produce more flowers.
Our price is for one dozen stems of ginger.
DOES NOT SHIP TO CALIFORNIA
Red ginger is also associated with Samoa where it grows well. So red ginger makes a great gift for your friends with ties to the island of Samoa.
For longer life trim about an inch off the stem. Dunk the entire flower in clean fresh water for about ten minutes. This will allow the flower to bring in more moisture. Trim the stem every few days and change the water. Avoid temperature extremes. The most common varieties are Jungle King for the red and Jungle Queen in pink.
This is a tropical plant so keep it out of the cold. If it gets below 40 where you live you won’t be able to grow your own. Red or pink ginger are not particularly fragrant. Many varieties of Hawaiian ginger are such as white and yellow. However the short lives of the blooms makes them not so suitable for tropical flower arrangements.
We send the full length stem to add height to your tropical flower arrangement. Red ginger is featured in our ‘Ahi’ (Fire) Hawaiian flower assortmentย as well as many others. If you’d like us to sub in a pink just let us know in the comments.
