Monstera Leaves – One Dozen
Monstera leaves are green and wide. ย They make a natural addition to any Hawaiian flower assortment. Some examples have holes in the ribbon like sections of the split leaves. So another nickname is Swiss Cheese plant. The leaves are firm and almost leathery. They can be used as a backing leaf or to add width to your arrangement. The stem is rather short compared to the length of the leaf though it should rest in water when displayed.
Monstera leaves are also popular for decorating as they can be used as place mats or to cover serving tables. Monstera make a lush, tropical covering for your luau table. Or place one leaf under each table as a place mat for serving. Wipe the leaves gently with a clean, damp cloth to make the green color more glossy. Trim the stem as needed and place on your tables.
Monstera leaves are from a plant brought to the tropics from Mexico. They do well as a landscape plant all around Hawaii and the tropics. You will see monstera in yards and outside hotels when you visit. You may find them on the mainland as a potted houseplant. They are not difficult to grow indoors. Some specimens produce a flower and and unusual looking fruit. The fruit was used for food and as a medicine in ancient Central and South American cultures. The largest monstera leaves can grow to a meter or more. This makes them very effective as a ground cover in tropical environments.
